Episode four of the Mavericks of Wrestling podcast features special guests Barry Windham, Tully Blanchard, and Curt Hennig, as James E. and the Horsemen look back at half a year of TCW already in the books.
Editor's Note: Thanks once again to website contributor, great friend, and all around good dude, Jason Hawver.
Jeff Jarrett: Hello Mavericks Nation! Welcome to this the 4th episode of the Mavericks of Wrestling podcast. I am your host, a proud member of the four horsemen, Jeff Jarrett. Alongside side me, as always, is the incomparable James Cornette. How are you feeling, Corney?
Jim Cornette: I don’t know how to explain it, Jeff. I feel like someone socked me in the jaw.
JJ: That’s strange.
JC: It really is. Might just be because my jaw has been clenched since Barry lost the US title.
JJ: That was a rough one, no doubt about that. But Barry is a champion we can all be proud of, whether he has a title or not.
JC: There you go, being toxically positive again.
JJ: Folks, we are just days removed from Global Gold: The Lethal Lottery and needless to say, the show was a smashing success.
JC: I didn’t think this Lethal Lottery idea of yours was going to work, Jeff.
JJ: But?
JC: It was fine.
JJ: You’re gonna make me blush with all this praise, Corney.
JC: Well, let’s go ahead and get into it, shall we?
JJ: Global Gold kicked off with a match featuring two guys who haven’t gotten a whole lot of shine, as Ron Hutchinson and Sam Houston locked up.
JC: This was a good opener between two hungry guys, unfortunately it ended in a count out.
JJ: I would not be surprised if Hutchinson asked for a rematch against Houston soon. The Lethal Lottery then kicked off with Sheiky baby and the Raging Bull getting a DQ win over Ball Buster Dave Taylor and Mr. Monday Night Rob Van Dam.
JC: Hold on now, you can’t just skip over DiBiase’s hair club for men jumping Bruiser Brody backstage!
JJ: And somehow, neither of them are facing suspension. Oh well. Another DQ saw Jimmy Snuka get a win over Doctor Death.
JC: I normally would complain about three non-finishes in a row like that. But for some strange reason Snuka getting a chair wrapped around his dome makes me smile.
JJ: The second match of the Lethal Lottery saw our own Boogie Woogie Man and the Macho Man go down in defeat to RVD and Taylor.
JC: That was a tough one. Boogie really got worked over.
JJ: Speaking of Taylor and getting worked over, the six man tag was next!
JC: The Machines looked real strong in victory. I look forward to seeing how they do against The Road Warriors.
JJ: The final match of the Lethal Lottery saw Macho Boogie, as Mavericks Nation took to chanting, make short work of Firpo and the Iron Sheik and in the process winning the Lethal Lottery!
JC: You hate to see any competitor go down with an injury, even one on Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Team.
JJ: We here at the Mavericks all wish Sheiky Baby a speedy recovery. Macho Boogie sadly came up short against the Rock & Roll Express.
JC: No real surprise there. Ricky and Robert are as good a team as there has ever been and Savage and Jimmy were wrestling their third match of the night.
JJ: Curt then managed to survive Andre.
JC: It wasn’t pretty, but Curt secured the points for us and that’s what matters.
JJ: More chaos backstage with Andre himself breaking up Buddy Rogers assault on Lou Thesz.
JC: Where’s Rogers' suspension?
JJ: Let it go, Corney. Vanity then picked up an impressive win over Diamond Dallas Page and Hacksaw Jim Duggan.
JC: I like both these teams, and you have to tip your hat to Vanity. They earned this shot at the US titles they’re getting.
JJ: We talked about it some, but up next Barry lost the United States championship to King Harley Race.
JC: You were there, Jeff! Why didn’t you crack Race’s skull with that guitar of yours?!?
JJ: Oh I wanted to, believe me. After what Race said right here on the podcast about Karen? But, I gave Barry my word. Tully and I were just out there to make sure there were none of DiBiase’s nonsense.
JC: Well, unsurprisingly given the talent in the ring, it was easily the match of the night.
JJ: Then the Road Warriors retained the world tag team championship against The Midnight Express.
JC: Ow!
JJ: What?
JC: Just that weird phantom jaw pain again.
JJ: Maybe you should go to the dentist?
JC: Maybe.
JJ: And finally in our main event, Brody tried and failed to defend the title against Lou Thesz.
JC: When we made the match, I was curious who would win: the consummate wrestler or the paramount brawler. In the end, the wrestler won.
JJ: Fans, we at the Mavericks of Wrestling could not be prouder of the show that TCW V proved to be. We were honored to present what we think is arguably the show of the year and are already hard at work making plans for Global Gold 2 next year.
JC: Lord help me. What’s next year going to have? A reverse battle royal inside a cage?
JJ: … That could work.
JC: Fans, we’ll be right back after this message from our sponsors WrestleTalk and Z-Biotic.
JJ: And we’ll be joined by not one, not two, but three special guests!
___
Jeff Jarrett: We are back, Mavericks Nation and joining us today for this, episode 4, are my brothers in arms, the Four Horsemen: Tully Blanchard, Curt Hennig, and Barry Windham. Fellas, let’s throw ‘em up one time for Harley.
<<*Curt, Barry, Tully, and Jeff each hold up the four finger salute*>>
Tully Blanchard: Thanks for having us, Jeff. You and Jimbo have been doing a great job on the podcast.
Curt Hennig: Happy to be here, Double J.
Barry Windham: Howdy.
Jim Cornette: Tully, first question is for you, how’s the arm?
TB: Fully healed and ready to go. I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring at TCW 6.
JJ: I was shocked, giving the injury he sustained at Global Gold during the Lethal Lottery that DiBiase immediately accepted your open challenge on the Iron Sheik’s behalf.
TB: Obviously, none of us want to see Sheik badly injured, but if DiBiase and Slick don’t want to give him the time to heal, that’s on them. I’m not going to go easy on him, just because he’s hurt.
CH: Nor should you. Seems to me like it’s a perfect opportunity to teach Khosrow a lesson about who he entrusts with his career.
BW: DiBiase has been playing dangerous games since the launch of TCW. With Curt, with Firpo, with Brody, with Thesz, with Race, with Doc, with and now with Sheik’s health. Sooner or later his luck is going to run out.
JJ: Barry, you mentioned Harley Race, so I have to ask, how are you feeling after losing the United States title?
BW: Obviously, not great. I wanted to hold on to the title, but I didn’t want to be the kind of champion who ducked challengers to keep the gold. Harley earned a title shot, and when we went out there at Global Gold we tore the house down. Could have gone either way, but on that day, Harley Race was the better man. I might ask for a rematch down the road, but right now, I’m focusing on other things.
CH: Can I say one thing about Harley?
JC: Of course. I have known Harley Race almost my whole life. He was my father’s tag team partner. He came to my fourth birthday; gave me a bottle of Jack Daniels and a carton of Marlboro Lights. I know Harley better than probably anyone in TCW. There is no way Harley is going to continue to put up with Teddy’s
JJ: Let’s move on before I get pissed off again.
TB: Turn the other cheek, brother.
JC: Curt, Barry, the two of you at TCW 6, will make your entry into the tag division.
BW: That’s right, Jimmy! The West Texas Rednecks ride again!
CH: Yeeeeee-HAW!
JC:… Why?
CH: Lighten up, Corney. I don’t need a reason to do what I do best with one of my best friends.
BW: My father was one half of the legendary Blackjacks. Curt’s dad won three world tag team titles with Harley. Tag wrestling is in our pedigree and together, there’s not a team on earth that we can’t go toe-to-toe with, and that includes the Road Warriors.
TB: If I can put my team captain hat on for a second, there is a strategic element to this as well. Wasteland and OBE have been racking up points thanks to their grip on those tag team championships. Someone has got to break thru there. With all due respect, Jimmy, the Valiants took the first swing at the Road Warriors and came up short. Dennis and Randy, put up a hell of a fight against them, sure, but still came up short. Now, Boogie and Johnny are ranked number one in the tag division, but they got leapfrogged for the title match at 6. Because they’ve had their shot. Hopefully they can get the shot at the US tag titles at TCW 7 because they deserve it by their ranking and because it would be a hell of a match…
JC: But when it comes to the LOD?
TB: When it comes to Hawk and Animal, The West Texas Rednecks are one of if not the best possible teams that can be fielded against them. To break that death grip on points that Wasteland is collecting. And we start that journey by going through the Bolsheviks at TCW 6 and getting a statement win.
JJ: Mavericks Nation, we’re going to take a quick break and after these words from our sponsors Better Help and the Chelsea Green swimsuit calendar, we’re going to play a game with the Four Horsemen.
___
Jim Cornette: And we are back with the Four Horsemen! Folks, we are going to announce the TCW half-year awards.
Tully Blanchard: Half year awards?
JC: That’s right, we have, direct from TCW Franchise Relations vice president Leva Bates, the winners at the half year mark in five prestigious categories. Before I announce the winners, I want each of the Horsemen to give me their picks.
Jeff Jarrett: Sounds good. What’s our first category?
JC: First up is match of the half year. Tully?
TB: Oh that’s easy. Thesz vs Rogers, two out of three falls.
Barry Windham: Dang it, that was gonna be my answer.
JC: There’s nothing that says you can’t pick the same thing.
Curt Hennig: I’ll also take Thesz vs Rogers.
JJ: I’ll take Curt vs Harley 1. The one where the good guy won.
CH: Thanks man.
BW: Damn it, that was my second choice!
JC: You can still pick it.
BW: No, I want to be different. I’ll take… The Survival of the Fittest battle royal. Absolutely dominating performance by Doctor Death.
JC: And the TCW match of the mid-year, as picked by the home office is… Thesz Vs Rogers.
TB: Hell of a match.
BW: Damn it! Come to me first next time, okay?
JC: Sure, Barry, we’ll do so right now, with non-wrestler of the half-year! Who’s your pick, Barry?
BW: Ummm…
CH: I’m gonna go with Lord Ewan.
BW: Hey! I was about to say that!
CH: You snooze you lose, bro. OBE are in first place. It’s hard to argue against them.
TB: Yeah, I figure it’s gotta be Lord Ewan or maybe Paul Heyman who’s been leading Wasteland to great success.
BW: Guys, I was supposed to go first!
JJ: What about Bobby Heenan? Brain’s been putting in great work on behalf of Natural Selection.
BW: Seriously guys.
JC: For pure entertainment value, what about Randal Tame and Patton Oswald? I might not like ‘em, but even I chuckle at their antics. Anyway, who’s your pick Barry?
BW:… Has anyone not been said?
CH: Chelsea Green’s b-
BW: Double J! I’m going with our own Double J. Between the Podcast and the promos and taking care of Horsemen business, Double J is my pick.
JJ: Thanks, Barry.
JC: Well, it happens that VP Bates agrees with you, Barry because Jeff Jarrett is the winner of the mid-year award for Non-Wrestler.
<<*The other Horsemen give Jeff high fives*>>
JJ: I’m honored and I hope to continue to have success for the team.
BW: What do I win for being the only one to guess right?
TB: It’s not that kind of game, Barry.
JC: Speaking of teams, we’ll look at tag team of the year next. Mister award winner, well start with you.
JJ: Only one choice. Road Warriors.
TB: Hawk and Animal.
CH: Legion of Doom.
BW: Rock & Roll Express.
JC: It is indeed the Road Warriors. No surprise there. Next category is team of the half year. Curt?
CH: I mean, it should be The Mavericks of Wrestling, am I right Mavs Nation?
TB: Naturally.
JJ: No doubt!
CH: But I’m going to guess OBE. They’ve been in first place and have two championships right now. Hard to argue against them.
TB: Yeah, I guess I’ll go with OBE as well.
JJ: Yeah, probably OBE.
BW: I’m going with the Mavericks.
JC: I admire your guts and loyalty Barry. But your wrong. The award does indeed go to OBE.
BW: For now. We’re coming for it at the end of the year.
JJ: Damn right.
JC: And finally, wrestler of the half-year. Guys, let’s let Barry pick first this time.
BW: Thanks Jimmy. I’ll go with Pampero Firpo. First TCW World Champion. Plus he ran that insane China shop gauntlet and had a strong showing in the Lethal Lottery.
JJ: Good pick, but I’m going to go with the man who beat Firpo for the title, Bruiser Brody.
CH: Well if we’re going to do this one under ‘Barry rules’ and each pick someone different, I’m gonna go with Barry, because he rules.
BW: Thanks brother.
CH: The only two-time champion in TCW. Banger after banger against guys like Harley Race, Jimmy Snuka, and the Destroyer. Barry’s my pick.
JC: Tully?
TB: You’re not going to like it.
JC: Give it to us, Rev.
TB: Ted DiBiase. No one has done more by doing less. He’s been the center of attention without really putting in much ring time. He’s worked smarter not harder and has been the straw that stirs the drink all year.
JC: You’re right… I don’t like it. And Mrs. Bates agrees with Double J because the wrestler of the year at the halfway point is former TCW world champion Bruiser Brody.
BW: Dang it. I thought I had a chance.
JC: It should have been you, Barry.
JJ: Folks were out of time, I want to thank my fellow Horsemen for being our guests this episode. When we come back from this break and these important words from our sponsors, me and Corney are going to discuss the Terry Gordy situation.
___
Jeff Jarrett: And we are back, Mavericks Nation. Jim, we’ve got to talk about the Bam Bam situation.
Jim Cornette: Jeff, I know you’ve talked to Terry. I’ve spoken to him, and so has Tully. Every member of the Mavericks has offered to be Gordy’s partner.
JJ: I know Curt really wanted it. He’s been wanting to get his hands on DiBiase for months.
JC: Dennis really wanted the spot too. He’s known Gordy since all the way back in the Mid-South days and was willing to go to war with him.
JJ: But Bam Bam is insisting on going it alone. He doesn’t want anyone else risking their neck for him.
JC: It’s all very brave. Very noble. And very, very stupid.
JJ: Corney!
JC: It is, Jeff! He’s going into this Trial by Combat facing Ted DiBiase and Doctor Death 2 on 1. There’s no other way to describe it.
JJ: Have faith, Corney.
JC: I’m an atheist, Jeff.
JJ: Well, let’s talk strategy. What advice would you give Bam Bam, if he were going to listen?
JC: I’d tell him that he’s got to get it down to 1-v-1 as fast as possible. If DiBiase locks on a hold: tap. If Doc hits him with a roll-up: don’t kick out. It goes against every instinct, every bit of training, but I think that’s what he’s got to do. Get it down to a fair fight while taking as little damage as possible while it’s two on one.
JJ: You know what I keep thinking about? Terry Gordy’s superpower isn’t his strength or his size. No, Bam Bam’s superpower is his gas can. Gordy does not get tired. I think that’s his key to victory. If he gets it down to 1-on-1, he’s got to wear the other man out. When the match gets into the twenty-minute mark, the half-hour mark, that’s when Gordy’s going to shine.
JC: We’ll see. We shall see.
JJ: That’s going to do it for Episode 4 of the Mavericks of Wrestling podcast. Mavs Nation, we’ll be looking at the results from TCW 6, we should have a guest joining us and we’ll preview TCW 7 presented by Wasteland.
