The Order of the British Empire, led by the unflappable Lord Ewan McGregor, sat atop the standings for most of the year en route to winning the first ever John Cena Memorial Trophy as league champions. Their road to the top included two TCW World Heavyweight Champions in Pampero Firpo and Lou Thesz and a long, dominant reign as TCW US Tag Team Champions from the Rock and Roll Express.
The tumultuous first season for the Million Dollar Team was the talk of the fans all year. Ted DiBiase talked a great game at the start of the season and gave Commissioner Danielson fits, but eventually Harley Race had enough and staged a coup, taking both Ted's team and his millions. At season's end, Terry Gordy - acquired in a mid-season trade - was three defenses into his reign as TCW World Heavyweight Champion.
Pampero Firpo shocked most observers of the sport with his performance in singles competition this year. He boasted a 9-5 record for one of TCW's best winning percentages despite also leading the league in total matches. Most notably, though, he started the year by becoming the first ever TCW World Heavyweight Champion and ended the year by claiming the TCW US Heavyweight Championship.
The Road Warriors were the standard of excellence in TCW's first season. They steamrolled their way to becoming the first TCW World Tag Team Championships in the three-night tournament that was TCW II: It Takes Two, taking less than 15 minutes combined to win all four matches. They ended the year a perfect 12-0, still the only two men to ever hold those precious gold belts.
The two-night spectacle of TCW's August event featured a formal ball attended by all of the TCW factions as a prelude to the second night's in-ring action. Ted DiBiase unsuccessfully ran a gauntlet of three matches, losing his millions and control of the Million Dollar Team to Harley Race. In the main event, Terry Gordy proved himself as champ, defending against Lou Thesz 2-0 in a best of three falls match.
